To protect himself, he must avoid them or defeat by shooting them. While he jumps up, he can eat food on the leaf. It's maybe chili, mushroom to helps he fly on the air, gold or even a bag of gold to get richer, or maybe poisoned mushroom that can change his direction when he jumps. It sounds good enough?
